PRINCIPAL ENGINEER

Global Near Space Services (GNSS) is currently seeking a Principal Engineer.

GNSS is a privately held corporation headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose flagship products focus on Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) unmanned aerospace systems. GNSS operates in conjunction with its parent company, Near Space Systems, Inc., in development of these LTA platforms with missions to provide wide-area communications, broadband, and sensing devices to meet the high demands of military and commercial customers for network connectivity and ready access to vital information.

Position: Principal Engineer (Position GNS-LTA-1009-13)

The Global Near Space Services (GNSS) principal engineer takes a leading role in the development of Lighter Than Air (LTA) platforms, from requirements and concept, trade studies and detail design, to manufacturing and flight test. This is a management, design, R&D, hands-on testing, and field support opportunity. Reporting directly to the GNSS Chief Engineer, the principal engineer is a hands-on manager who uses technical and administrative skills to oversee and complete engineering projects.

 

Design Responsibilities

As the lead or senior engineer of engineering projects, the principal engineer conceptualizes the initial design specifications for each project. This involves working with other GNSS departments to establish user or customer requirements, project costs, and resources. Once the initial concept is approved by the organization, the design project begins under supervision of the principal engineer.

 

Project Responsibilities

The principal engineer ensures the project is completed in a cost-effective and timely manner, that project financial budgets are adhered to, and that projects are completed in the required time frame. This includes allocating and directing engineering staff, and allocating resources needed for the project.

 

Management Responsibilities

The principal engineer coordinates activities of the engineering staff, including training and scheduling staff, resolving engineering design and test problems, and evaluating and approving changes and specifications.

The principal engineer prepares progress reports to present to upper-level management through the duration of the project, reports any concerns, and obtains approval for necessary changes.

 

Experience

Broad base of capability, including structures, propulsion, composites, electronics, thermal, electrical, systems, and configuration experience, including a minimum of 12 (twelve) years of experience in the following:

  • Management of engineering teams
  • Conducting studies
  • Defining system requirements and subsystem configurations
  • Identifying performance capabilities
  • Supporting system level integration
  • Performing analysis, test and evaluation
  • Using project management tools, such as Microsoft Project or equivalent
  • Must be able to produce production drawings (Solid Edge CAD, Nastran, and FEMAP experience preferable)

 

Education

Bachelors in Engineering, preferably aeronautical or mechanical
